Saudi Arabia Embraces the Future of Travel with Joby Aviation’s New Electric Air Taxi Service in Partnership with GACA

Saudi Arabia is set to become a key player in the emerging field of advanced air mobility (AAM) with the announcement of a partnership between the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and Joby Aviation. The two organizations are collaborating to introduce Joby’s electric air taxi service in the Kingdom, a move that aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 to modernize its infrastructure and economy.

Joby Aviation, a leading transportation company developing electric, vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has been making strides in the aviation industry with its quiet, fast and efficient air taxis. These electric air taxis are designed to offer convenient and environmentally friendly solutions for urban transportation, making them an ideal fit for high-density areas in need of faster, greener travel options.

Through the new partnership with GACA, Joby Aviation aims to bring this innovative technology to Saudi Arabia, offering a transformative approach to urban air mobility in the Kingdom. Joby’s electric air taxi is expected to reduce travel times in congested cities, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional modes of transportation, such as cars and helicopters.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between GACA and Joby Aviation sets the framework for the rapid deployment of electric air taxis in Saudi Arabia. This agreement is built upon the standards established by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), providing a foundation for the development of a regulatory framework that will streamline the approval process for Joby’s aircraft in the Kingdom. With this partnership, Saudi Arabia joins a growing list of nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea and the UAE, that are exploring the potential of electric air taxis.

The MOU also highlights the Kingdom’s commitment to building a strong regulatory environment for air mobility, ensuring that all elements of the air taxi ecosystem, from aircraft certification to pilot training, meet international safety standards. By leveraging Joby’s extensive experience in FAA certification, the collaboration aims to establish a robust and efficient regulatory framework that supports the safe, scalable deployment of electric air taxis in Saudi Arabia.

In addition to regulatory advancements, the partnership between GACA and Joby Aviation emphasizes the importance of localizing manufacturing and developing national talent to support the air mobility sector. The two organizations will work together to build the knowledge and expertise required to sustain these new technologies and foster innovation within the Kingdom.

Captain Sulaiman bin Saleh Al-Muhaimedi, the Executive Vice President of Aviation Safety and Environmental Sustainability at GACA, expressed the importance of not only introducing new technologies to Saudi Arabia but also cultivating the necessary skills to support them long-term. This initiative will help create an ecosystem in which innovation can thrive, while also ensuring that Saudi Arabia remains at the forefront of the rapidly developing advanced air mobility industry.

Joby Aviation’s push into Saudi Arabia builds on the company’s broader strategy to commercialize electric air taxis worldwide. Joby has already made significant progress in the United States, where it is nearing the final stages of FAA Type Certification and it continues to be an active participant in global efforts to standardize regulations for advanced air mobility. By partnering with GACA, Joby aims to further accelerate the development of its air taxi service in Saudi Arabia, helping the Kingdom to achieve its ambitious aviation goals.

This collaboration also complements Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to transform its aviation sector. As part of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy under Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in infrastructure and connectivity, with plans to triple annual passenger traffic and expand its air cargo capacity. The Kingdom is also positioning itself to become a global leader in aviation by opening two long-haul connecting hubs and extending its network to 250 destinations.

Joby Aviation’s partnership with Abdul Latif Jameel, one of the Kingdom’s leading conglomerates, is another key component of the air taxi service’s deployment in Saudi Arabia. Together, they are exploring the delivery of up to 200 Joby aircraft, valued at approximately $1 billion. In addition, Aloula Aviation, the aviation subsidiary of Saudi Aramco, is also part of the project, further strengthening the collaboration between Joby Aviation and the Kingdom’s leading aviation entities.

Through these partnerships, Joby is set to provide a fast, quiet and convenient transportation option for travelers in Saudi Arabia, while also contributing to the Kingdom’s efforts to diversify its economy and modernize its infrastructure as part of Vision 2030.

With the introduction of Joby Aviation’s electric air taxi service, Saudi Arabia is taking a bold step toward the future of travel. This partnership with GACA not only supports the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 but also sets the stage for Saudi Arabia to become a leader in the global air mobility market. As regulatory frameworks are developed, technologies are localized and national talent is nurtured, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself at the forefront of innovation in aviation, poised to shape the future of transportation in the region and beyond.
